Gardening Growing Guide for January

Second month of Winter but on the occasional sunny day can feel more like Spring. Make the most of dry days to get on with tasks because February, in recent years, has had such terrible weather that more time is spent indoors than in the garden.

Continue to gather all seeds, bulbs and seed potatoes that you will need for the year ahead.

A great time to work on any structures in the garden such as painting or fixing sheds, greenhouses, compost bins, cold frames and fences.

I don’t have a greenhouse so tend to keep the main bulk of my seed sowing until March and April. Time in the garden is shorter as daytime temperatures usually start dropping from 2pm and especially from 3pm so an early start is recommended.
